Dizziness and vertigo can be unsettling, and not all causes are the same. At Texas Hearing Center, we provide audiology-based evaluation and treatment for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) using evidence-based diagnostic techniques and in-office treatment maneuvers, delivered by a licensed Doctor of Audiology.
What Is BPPV?
BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) is one of the most common causes of vertigo. It occurs when tiny calcium crystals (otoconia) become displaced within the inner ear’s balance system, leading to brief episodes of spinning dizziness, often triggered by changes in head position such as lying down, rolling over in bed, or looking up.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
Your BPPV appointment is a focused vestibular evaluation designed to determine whether your symptoms are consistent with positional vertigo.
During the visit, we may:
- Review your dizziness history and symptom triggers
- Perform positional testing to evaluate inner-ear balance function
- Identify which ear and canal may be affected
- Provide in-office treatment maneuvers when appropriate
If BPPV is not identified, we will recommend appropriate next steps, which may include referral for additional medical or diagnostic evaluation.
Treatment Expectations
- Symptoms may temporarily worsen during testing or treatment. This is expected and typically short-lived.
- One visit may not fully resolve symptoms. Some patients require multiple appointments for optimal results.
- Residual imbalance can persist for several days as the vestibular system readjusts.
For safety, it is required to arrange transportation to and from your appointment, as dizziness may temporarily increase. If someone is not present with you at the appoitnemnt, we will not conduct the service.
When Additional Care Is Needed
Not all dizziness is caused by BPPV. If your symptoms suggest a non-positional, neurological, cardiovascular, or medically complex cause, Texas Hearing Center will recommend referral to the appropriate provider (such as an ENT, neurologist, or vestibular physical therapist).
Audiologic care does not replace medical evaluation by a physician when indicated.
